Responsible Recycling for Old Computers and Electronics
If you have old computers, monitors, printers, networking gear, or other electronics that have reached end of life and you don\'t know what to do with them, we can take them. We\'re a drop-off computer repair shop in Amherst, NY, and e-waste recycling is one of the things we offer because customers regularly need it as part of upgrading or replacing equipment. Bring the old stuff in, we route it to reputable e-waste recyclers in the Western New York region, and (if needed) we erase the drives first so your data doesn\'t end up somewhere unexpected.
The reason this service exists is that "throwing electronics in the trash" isn\'t actually legal in New York for most electronics, and even where it\'s technically legal, it\'s not great. Computers and monitors contain heavy metals, flame retardants, and other materials that don\'t belong in landfills. They also contain materials worth recovering: copper, aluminum, gold, palladium, and rare earth elements. Real recyclers separate these materials and route each to appropriate processing.
The other reason this service exists is that customers often have a stack of old electronics in a basement, garage, or back closet and don\'t know where to take it. Big-box stores have varying e-waste programs (Best Buy used to take many items free, then started charging for some, then changed again; Staples has a program; Home Depot takes some battery types). Erie County runs occasional e-waste collection events. None of these are particularly convenient if you don\'t happen to be near them or aren\'t aware they\'re happening. We\'re a drop-off shop that happens to also accept e-waste, which makes the logistics simpler for customers who are already coming to us for other work.
This service pairs naturally with our other services. If you\'re bringing in a new computer for setup, we\'ll happily take the old one for recycling. If you\'re upgrading and the old machine needs the drive erased before it goes to recycling, we handle that too with our drive erasing service or our certified data destruction if you need physical destruction with documentation.
What We Accept for Recycling
- Desktop computers. All brands, all ages, working or not. Towers, all-in-ones, mini PCs.
- Laptops. Any make, any condition. Mac and PC alike. Including damaged laptops with cracked screens, dead batteries, or water damage.
- Computer monitors. LCD monitors, older CRT computer monitors. (Note: TVs go through a different recycling stream; see Erie County\'s household hazardous waste program for those.)
- Printers and scanners. Inkjet, laser, all-in-one, dedicated photo printers. Best if you remove toner and ink cartridges first; those have their own recycling streams.
- Networking equipment. Routers, switches, wireless access points, modems, cable modems, range extenders, mesh systems.
- External storage. External hard drives, USB sticks, SD cards (still readable or not).
- UPS units. Uninterruptible power supplies. Batteries inside are handled appropriately by the recycler.
- Computer accessories. Keyboards, mice, computer speakers, USB hubs, docking stations, webcams, headsets.
- Cables. Power cables, USB cables, HDMI cables, ethernet cables, miscellaneous cabling.
- Old phones and tablets. If they\'re computer-adjacent (we\'re not a phone repair shop but we accept old smartphones for recycling).
- Other small consumer electronics. MP3 players, GPS units, digital cameras, e-readers, calculators.
What we don\'t take: TVs (different recycling stream), large appliances (refrigerators, stoves, washers), loose batteries removed from devices (those go to dedicated battery recycling at battery-specific drop-off points), fluorescent bulbs and tubes, smoke detectors with radioactive elements, anything visibly leaking or damaged in ways that suggest hazardous content.
What\'s Included in an E-Waste Drop-Off
- Free intake conversation. Tell us what you have and what you want done with it. Working equipment that might be useful to refurbishment programs gets routed differently than dead equipment that\'s purely for material recovery.
- Optional drive erasing. Before recycling, we can erase the hard drive so your data doesn\'t leave your hands intact. This is a separate add-on service but pairs naturally with e-waste drop-off.
- Optional physical destruction with certificate. For sensitive data scenarios, we destroy the drive physically and provide documentation. Useful for businesses with compliance requirements.
- Routing to reputable recycler. Equipment goes to e-Stewards or R2 certified recyclers in the Western New York region.
- Receipt for businesses if needed. Documentation that equipment was responsibly disposed of.
- Pickup logistics if needed. For larger volumes (estate cleanouts, business refreshes), we can sometimes arrange pickup or coordinate directly with our recycler for on-site pickup at your location.
Why Recycle Through Us Instead of Other Options
You have other places to take e-waste in the Buffalo / Erie County area. Best Buy, Staples, Home Depot for some categories. Erie County\'s seasonal e-waste collection events. Various other services. Reasons customers prefer dropping it with us:
Convenience when you\'re already coming to us. If you\'re bringing in a new computer for setup or an old one for repair, dropping off retiring electronics in the same visit avoids a separate trip.
Drive erasing is part of the same conversation. Dropping a computer at a generic recycler means trusting them with your data. We can wipe it before it goes to recycling, with you present if you want.
Certified destruction available. Few generic recyclers offer documented physical drive destruction. We do, with paperwork.
Wider range of accepted items. Some big-box stores accept only their own brands or charge for certain categories. We accept most computer-related electronics regardless of brand or condition.
No timing window. Erie County\'s e-waste collection events are scheduled. We\'re open by appointment whenever you want to drop off.
The work happens here. For drive erasing or destruction before recycling, we do that ourselves on our bench. The equipment doesn\'t leave our shop until the drive work is done.
Common E-Waste Recycling Scenarios We See in Amherst
The "I just got a new Mac" customer
Customer bought a new MacBook or iMac and wants the old Mac recycled. We migrate the data to the new machine, erase the drive on the old one, and recycle the equipment. Most common scenario.
The "I just got a new PC" customer
Same as above but with a Windows machine. We handle the migration, erasing, and recycling.
The cleaned-out basement
Customer is cleaning out a basement, garage, or back closet that has accumulated old electronics over a decade or more. Old desktop towers, dead laptops, monitors that nobody uses anymore, cables, accessories. They want it gone and don\'t know where to start. We take it all in one visit.
The estate cleanup
Family settling an estate that includes computers, possibly multiple. Some equipment may need data attention before disposal (the deceased\'s computer with email, financial records, photos). We handle the data side, then recycle.
The small business equipment refresh
Local small business replacing a fleet of computers. Old machines need to leave the office. We handle bulk drop-off, drive erasing or destruction with certificates as needed, and routing to the recycler.
The "Best Buy turned me away" customer
Customer tried to drop equipment at a big-box store and got turned away because of brand restrictions, item-type restrictions, or fees. They came to us as the alternative. We accept most computer-related electronics.
The CRT monitor that needs to go
Old CRT computer monitor that\'s been gathering dust for years. Heavy, awkward, contains lead in the picture tube. Most general waste pickups won\'t take CRTs because of the lead content. We route them to recyclers equipped to handle the leaded glass properly.
The dead laptop with sentimental data
Customer has a dead laptop that won\'t boot. Files inside might be recoverable but they\'re not sure. We can do data recovery first to retrieve anything important, then recycle the carcass. Or recycle directly if the customer doesn\'t need the data.
How Pricing Works for E-Waste Recycling
For most home customers, drop-off is at no charge or modest charge depending on volume and type, especially when paired with other repair work. For business customers with larger volumes, we work with you on fair pricing.
Add-ons:
- Drive erasing before recycling (separate hard drive erasing service)
- Certified physical destruction with documentation (separate certified data destruction service)
- Receipt for business documentation purposes
- Pickup at your location for large volumes (case-by-case)

Before You Drop Off Electronics
Pull personal data off the computer if you haven\'t already. We can help with this if needed.
Decide whether you want the drive erased or physically destroyed. Erasing is sufficient for most home situations; destruction is for sensitive data scenarios.
Remove ink and toner cartridges from printers if you have them. Those have their own recycling streams (often free return shipping through the manufacturer).
Pull any media (CDs, USB drives, SD cards) out of devices.
For larger volumes, call ahead so we can plan logistics.
Then schedule a drop-off at 716-771-2536.
