A Mac Pro tower configured years ago can be expanded to support modern workflows. An older MacBook Pro with replaceable RAM can be brought up to a useful capacity for several more years of service.

  If you're running out of memory on an Apple Silicon Mac, your real options are: optimize what's running (closing apps you aren't using), accept current performance, or trade in for a Mac with more memory.

• My iMac came with 8 GB. Can I upgrade?

  Depends on the year. 2012-2020 iMacs (Intel) generally have user-accessible RAM through a hatch on the back, easy to upgrade. The 21.5-inch models from 2012-2015 are harder because the access requires removing the display. The 24-inch Apple Silicon iMac has soldered RAM and cannot be upgraded.

• My MacBook Pro is from 2014. Can I add RAM?
