RAM Upgrades for the Macs That Still Allow It
If your Mac is upgradeable and needs more memory, we can help. We\'re a drop-off computer repair shop in Amherst, NY. Mac Pro towers, older Mac mini units, 2012-2020 iMacs, pre-2013 MacBook Pros are all upgradeable with user-replaceable RAM. Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4) and most modern MacBooks have soldered memory and cannot be upgraded.
The honest reality of Mac RAM upgrades: Apple has been moving away from user-upgradeable memory for over a decade. The current Apple Silicon Macs use unified memory architecture where RAM is physically part of the processor package. The capacity you buy is the capacity you have for the life of the machine. We tell every customer this up front before they bring a Mac in expecting an upgrade that isn\'t physically possible.
For the Macs that are upgradeable, the value is real: an iMac that came with 8 GB struggling on current macOS becomes responsive with 16 or 32 GB. A Mac Pro tower configured years ago can be expanded to support modern workflows. An older MacBook Pro with replaceable RAM can be brought up to a useful capacity for several more years of service.
Our general RAM upgrade page covers both platforms. PC RAM upgrade covers Windows machines.
