New Mac or PC Configured the Way Your Old One Was
If you bought a new computer and want it set up properly without spending hours yourself migrating files, configuring email, removing bloatware, and figuring out why various pieces of software don\'t work the way they did on the old machine, we can handle that. We\'re a drop-off computer repair shop in Amherst, NY, and new computer setup is regular work for us, especially as customers replace aging machines and want the new one to feel like a continuation rather than a fresh start that lost everything.
What we set up: data and files migrated from the old computer to the new one, essential software installed and configured, email accounts set up across whatever programs you use, browser bookmarks and saved passwords migrated, printers and peripherals configured, cloud sync (iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive) configured per your existing accounts, security set up, manufacturer bloatware removed. Optional add-ons: backup setup so the new machine\'s data is protected from day one, phone and tablet sync configured, multiple-computer household sharing set up, secure erasing and recycling of the old computer.
The honest premise: setting up a new computer yourself is doable. Apple\'s Migration Assistant and various Windows transfer tools can move your data. Manufacturer setup wizards walk you through account creation. The reasons customers prefer to bring it in are time (a thorough setup takes hours), getting it right the first time (small mistakes during setup cause issues for months), the desire to have someone who\'s done it many times handle the parts that don\'t work as smoothly as the marketing implies, and the convenience of dropping off both old and new computers and getting back a ready-to-use new machine.
This page covers setup in general. Our Mac new computer setup page covers Apple-specific details, and our PC new computer setup page covers Windows-specific details. If you\'re also considering what to buy, our purchase consulting service helps with that decision.

Common New Computer Setup Scenarios
The "I just bought a new MacBook Air"
Most common. Customer migrating from an older Mac to a new Apple Silicon MacBook Air. Migration Assistant works well for this; we run it cleanly, address any apps or settings that don\'t come over correctly, configure new things specific to the new Mac (Touch ID, Sequoia features), and hand back a ready-to-use machine.
The "I just bought a new PC"
Customer migrating from an older Windows PC to a new one. Various transfer paths depending on the situation. We use whichever tool fits, plus manual configuration for things that need attention. Bloatware removal is always part of new PC setup.
The Mac-to-PC switcher
Customer who\'s used Mac for years, switched to PC for cost or work reasons, needs the transition handled. We migrate documents and media, find Windows equivalents for Mac-only software they used, configure email and accounts on the new PC, walk them through Windows differences.
The PC-to-Mac switcher
Reverse scenario. Long-time PC user trying Mac for the first time. Same migration approach, with attention to apps that need Mac equivalents (Office for Mac is widely available, Adobe is cross-platform, but some Windows-specific software has no Mac version).
The household with multiple new computers
Family bought new computers for several members at once (often during back-to-school or after a major event). We work through them together, configuring shared resources (printer, network, family iCloud or Microsoft Family) once.
The small business equipment refresh
Business replacing aging computers for several employees. Standardized setup across machines, business software configured per role, business email connected, shared resources configured. Often part of broader small business IT work.
The "I gave up on my old computer" customer
Customer\'s old computer has been frustrating for months or years, they finally bought new, want this one set up right from the start. We pay extra attention to the bloatware removal and the configuration choices that\'ll keep this new machine pleasant to use for the long term.
The retirement gift Mac or PC
Family bought a parent or grandparent a new computer. Often the recipient isn\'t comfortable with technology and needs the setup handled completely so they can just use the machine. Patient configuration, accessibility settings, email and family-photo access set up, simple desktop layout.
Mac vs PC New Computer Setup
Same-platform setup is easier on both sides because of platform-specific migration tools. Apple\'s Migration Assistant handles Mac-to-Mac transitions cleanly. Microsoft\'s setup wizard handles Microsoft-account-to-Microsoft-account transitions. The various third-party tools (Laplink PCmover, Acronis True Image) handle PC-to-PC.
Cross-platform setup (Mac to PC or vice versa) is more involved because file formats, application ecosystems, and system-level configurations differ. We migrate what crosses cleanly (documents, photos, media, browser data, email) and adapt what doesn\'t. The customer ends up with a working new computer; some workflows may need adjustment for the new platform\'s conventions.
Our Mac new computer setup page covers Apple Silicon Macs, Intel Macs, the various Apple ecosystem services, and Mac-specific configuration. PC new computer setup covers Windows 11, OEM bloatware variations across Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and the Windows-side migration tools.

How Pricing Works
Quoted based on scope. Single computer with light migration is one price. Multiple computers, complex migration, and add-ons (extensive email setup, multi-printer office configuration, secure erasing of old machine) take longer and price accordingly.
