New Windows Laptop or Desktop, Set Up Without the Bloatware
If you bought a new Windows PC and want it set up properly, with bloatware removed, your data migrated from the old computer, software configured, email working, and printers connected, we can handle that. We're a drop-off computer repair shop in Buffalo, NY, and PC setup is regular work for us. Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI, Microsoft Surface, custom-built desktops, gaming rigs.
The PC new computer setup story has more to it than the Mac story specifically because of bloatware. Manufacturers preinstall a lot of software that ranges from "useful" to "actively annoying" to "ad-supported nuisance." The McAfee/Norton trial that nags constantly. Third-party "PC optimizer" tools. Pre-trial games. Ad-supported utilities the manufacturer was paid to include. None of it serves you, all of it slows the PC down or pesters for upgrades. Removing it is the most consistent value of new PC setup.
Beyond bloatware: data migration from the old PC, Windows updates current, Microsoft account configured, email accounts working, printer connected, browser bookmarks and saved passwords migrated, software you actually use installed and configured, security verified.
Our general new computer setup page covers both platforms. Mac new computer setup covers Apple machines.
What's Included in New PC Setup
- Initial conversation. What you bought, what you're replacing, what you do with the PC, what software and accounts you need.
- Windows updates current. Bring the new PC fully patched before any other work.
- Bloatware removal. Manufacturer trial software, third-party junk, ad-supported utilities. Keep what's useful (manufacturer driver updaters, warranty checks); remove what isn't.
- Microsoft account setup. Or local account if you prefer (Windows 11 Home tries hard to require Microsoft account; we can work around that on request).
- Data migration from old PC. Files, browser data, email archives, application data. Migration tool or manual approach depending on situation.
- Software installation. Microsoft Office or alternatives, browser of choice, email client, business software, hobby software.
- Email setup. Each account configured properly.
- Browser configuration. Chrome, Firefox, Edge with bookmarks and passwords migrated.
- Printer setup. Existing printers configured.
- OneDrive / Google Drive / Dropbox. Cloud sync configured per your existing accounts.
- Security verification. Microsoft Defender enabled and current, firewall configured, updates set to automatic.
- Backup setup. File History, OneDrive backup, or third-party backup configured.
- Multiple users if needed. Separate user accounts for family members.
- Optional old PC handling. Secure erase, recycling.
- Walkthrough and documentation. Show you what changed, where things are, written notes for reference.
The Bloatware Problem on New PCs
Worth its own section because it's the most consistent annoyance with new Windows machines. The manufacturer paid for the PC at retail, but they offset some of that by accepting payment from third parties to preinstall software. The result is a new PC with:
Trial antivirus that nags constantly. McAfee or Norton trial that prompts you to subscribe every time you boot, scans aggressively, slows the system. Microsoft Defender is already there and works fine; the trial AV is just nagware.
Manufacturer "utilities" of varying value. Some are actually useful (Dell SupportAssist, Lenovo Vantage, HP Support Assistant for warranty and driver updates). Many are bloated, ad-supported, or duplicate Windows features. We keep what helps; remove what doesn't.
Pre-trial games and entertainment apps. "Free games" that pin themselves to the taskbar, streaming app trials, social media bloat.
Sponsored partner software. Random utilities, "PC optimizers," browser toolbars (yes, still), shopping helpers. None of it adds value.
Microsoft's own bloat. Even Microsoft adds preinstalled apps to Windows 11 that most users don't need. We unpin and (where possible) uninstall.
Removing this stuff is one of the most consistently valuable parts of new PC setup. Customers regularly tell us the new PC feels noticeably faster after bloatware removal alone, even though the underlying hardware didn't change.
