Worn or Swollen MacBook Batteries, Replaced Safely
If your MacBook battery is worn out, swollen, won\'t charge, or has triggered a "service recommended" warning, we can help. We\'re a drop-off computer repair shop in Amherst, NY, and MacBook battery replacement is one of the things we do every week. MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, every model year from the unibody era through current Apple Silicon. Bring the MacBook in, we identify the right battery, we install it carefully, we calibrate it on the new install, and we hand the MacBook back working. Your data, your apps, your Apple ID, your iCloud setup, all in place.
The MacBook battery story is different from the PC laptop battery story in a few important ways. Apple uses adhesive-bonded batteries on every MacBook from roughly 2016 onward, with multiple individual cells glued directly to the bottom case. This makes the replacement more involved than a typical PC laptop battery swap, both because of the careful solvent-and-patience removal process and because the parts are more expensive than commodity laptop batteries. The trade-off Apple made was thinner, lighter MacBooks; the consequence is that battery replacement is a real job rather than a pop-out-and-pop-in operation.
The honest first thing about pricing: MacBook battery replacements are not cheap. Apple\'s adhesive construction plus the cost of aftermarket batteries that meet Apple\'s specifications means even a base MacBook Air battery costs noticeably more than a typical PC laptop battery. The most involved jobs (16-inch MacBook Pro with multi-cell adhesive battery, or jobs where we have to address swelling that\'s damaged adjacent components) cost more again. We tell you the real number before any work happens.
That said, for any MacBook that\'s otherwise working, battery replacement is dramatically less than the cost of a new MacBook. An aging MacBook Pro that\'s now tethered to an outlet becomes portable again for a fraction of replacement cost. A swollen MacBook Air that wobbles on a flat surface becomes flat and clickable again. The math almost always favors the repair on MacBooks under five years old.
This page covers MacBook battery replacement specifically. Our general battery replacement page covers both Mac and PC at a higher level. PC laptop battery replacement is on its own page.
Common MacBook Battery Issues We See
- Capacity loss from normal aging. The MacBook still works but battery life has dropped from 8-10 hours to under 90 minutes for normal use. Most common scenario, and a clean replacement candidate.
- Swelling. The battery has expanded, pushing the bottom case outward, the trackpad upward, or both. The MacBook may wobble on a flat surface; the trackpad may stop clicking properly. This is a fire and chemical hazard. Bring it in soon.
- "Service Recommended" warning. macOS has detected the battery has dropped below 80 percent of original capacity. Visible in the battery menu when you hold Option and click the battery icon, or in System Settings > Battery > Battery Health.
- Won\'t charge or charges intermittently. The MacBook runs on AC power but doesn\'t accumulate battery charge. Could be the battery, the charging port, the charging circuit, or a damaged USB-C cable. We diagnose.
- Won\'t turn on without AC. The battery has fully failed. The MacBook works as a desktop replacement only. Replacement restores normal portable function.
- Random shutdowns under load. The MacBook powers off when running CPU-intensive tasks even with the battery showing significant remaining percentage. The battery has lost the ability to deliver peak power even though it still holds some charge.
- Battery percentage jumping erratically. Showing 80 percent for hours, then suddenly 30 percent, or the OS reporting times that don\'t match reality. Often a sign of cell imbalance in an aging battery.
- Cycle count well above 1,000. Apple rates most MacBook batteries for 1,000 cycles. Beyond that, capacity loss accelerates and replacement becomes worthwhile even if the OS hasn\'t flagged "Service Recommended" yet.
- Trackpad won\'t click. Underrated symptom because customers don\'t connect it to the battery. The MacBook trackpad sits above the battery; swelling pushes it up and eliminates the gap needed for clicking. Battery replacement usually restores trackpad function.
What\'s Included in a MacBook Battery Replacement
- Free diagnostic. We pull battery health from System Information, check cycle count and capacity, verify the charging circuit is working, and rule out other causes (charging port damage, charger issues, software settings).
- Sourcing the right battery. Different MacBook models accept different batteries. We identify the correct part using model identifier and battery part number. We use Apple-grade aftermarket or Apple-pulled batteries from reputable sources.
- Pentalobe and tri-point screwdriver work. Apple uses pentalobe screws on the bottom case and tri-point screws inside on most models. We have the right tools.
- Adhesive removal with solvent. Modern MacBook batteries are bonded to the chassis with strong adhesive. Apple\'s designs include specific tabs for service technicians to apply isopropyl alcohol carefully, which softens the adhesive enough for safe removal. We use this approach rather than prying, which is what causes punctures and bent cells in DIY attempts.
- Trackpad cable protection. The trackpad cable runs underneath the battery on most MacBook models. We work around it carefully during removal.
- Adhesive cleanup. Old adhesive residue gets cleaned from the chassis before the new battery goes in.
- New adhesive application. Fresh adhesive strips of the correct type for your MacBook model.
- Battery calibration. Charge to 100 percent, discharge under load, charge again. This gets macOS reading the new battery correctly. Multiple cycles to confirm everything is working.
- Old battery disposal. Recycled through proper hazardous-material channels.
- Real warranty. Manufacturer warranty on the battery (typically six months to one year) plus our installation labor warranty.
MacBook Models We Service for Battery Replacement
- MacBook Air (Apple Silicon, M1 onward): adhesive-mounted, full battery replacement available. Most common MacBook battery work we do given how widespread these are.
- MacBook Air (Intel, 2018-2020): adhesive-mounted, similar process to Apple Silicon.
- MacBook Air (Intel, 2010-2017): screw-mounted in the older wedge design. Easier replacement than modern adhesive batteries.
- MacBook Pro (Apple Silicon, 2021 onward): adhesive-mounted multi-cell battery.
- MacBook Pro (Intel, 2016-2020 Touch Bar): adhesive-mounted.
- MacBook Pro Retina (2012-2015): adhesive-mounted but with a different cell layout than later models.
- MacBook Pro (2009-2012 unibody): screw-mounted battery, easier replacement.
- 12-inch Retina MacBook (2015-2017): tightly packed adhesive-mounted battery.
- White polycarbonate MacBook (pre-2009): user-replaceable battery slots in the bottom case. Original-design Apple parts are scarce now but compatible aftermarket batteries are still available.

Why Drop-Off Beats DIY MacBook Battery Replacement
MacBook battery replacement looks doable on YouTube, and customers occasionally try it themselves. We\'ve fixed enough DIY attempts gone wrong to flag what specifically tends to go wrong.
The puncture risk. Modern MacBook batteries are large flat cells. DIY removal often involves prying with a metal tool against the cells, which can puncture them. A punctured lithium battery can ignite, and the fire can be intense. We see at least one or two "I tried to do it myself and now it\'s smoking" calls a year. The right approach uses solvent to soften the adhesive, not force.
The trackpad cable. The MacBook trackpad cable runs across the chassis directly underneath the battery on most models. DIY removals frequently damage this cable, turning a battery replacement into a battery-plus-trackpad job. The fix is to know the cable\'s routing and work around it, which takes experience.
The bent-bottom-case problem. Modern MacBook bottom cases are aluminum and bend if you flex them too much during disassembly. Customers occasionally end up with cosmetic dents from prying or bending the case while trying to lift a stubborn battery. We don\'t pry; we use solvent and patience.
The wrong-battery problem. Several MacBook models have multiple battery variants, and ordering the wrong one means the cable doesn\'t reach, the form factor is slightly off, or the capacity ratings don\'t match what macOS expects. We identify the right part using your model identifier.
The disposal question. Old MacBook batteries don\'t go in regular trash. They need to go to proper hazardous-material recycling. Most customers don\'t know where to take them; we handle it.
Common MacBook Battery Replacement Scenarios We See in Amherst
The 5-year-old MacBook Pro that\'s tethered to the wall
The most common scenario. The customer has been working with the MacBook plugged in for the past year because it dies in 30 minutes unplugged. They\'ve been deferring the battery replacement. We do it, the MacBook regains its portability, and the customer remembers what owning a laptop is supposed to feel like.
The swollen MacBook Air with the trackpad that won\'t click
An aging MacBook Air where the trackpad has stopped clicking. The customer thinks the trackpad is broken. The actual cause is a swollen battery underneath pushing it up. Battery replacement restores trackpad function and removes the fire hazard.
The MacBook Pro with the bulging bottom case
4-7 year old MacBook Pro where the bottom case has visibly separated from the chassis along an edge. Battery has swollen significantly. Customer is worried but not sure what\'s wrong. We replace, the case sits flat again, no more concerns.
The Apple Silicon MacBook with "Service" warnings on a third-party battery already installed
Customer had a MacBook battery replaced elsewhere, macOS now shows "Service" warnings even though the battery functions. This is a software display issue on Apple Silicon Macs related to battery serial number tracking, not a real problem with the battery. We tell them what\'s happening and confirm the battery itself is healthy.
The "Service Recommended" warning that\'s been there for a year
Customer\'s MacBook has been showing the warning for months and they\'ve been ignoring it. Battery is below 70 percent capacity. We replace, capacity goes back to 100 percent of new, life resumes.
The MacBook that won\'t charge
Charge cable plugs in, no charging happens. Could be the cable, the charger, the charging port (USB-C ports get worn), the charging circuit, or the battery. We diagnose. About half the time it\'s the battery; the other half is one of the other causes and we fix that instead.
The 2012-2015 Retina MacBook Pro
Older Retina MacBook Pro that\'s otherwise still useful. Battery has worn out and customer wants to keep using the machine. Replacement is straightforward; the MacBook gets several more years of useful life. These pair well with our Mac SSD upgrade service if the storage is also showing its age.
The "I bought a battery online and want it installed"
Customer purchased a MacBook battery from a marketplace and wants us to install it. We\'ll do this, with the caveat that we can\'t warranty parts we didn\'t source. About half the time the customer-bought battery is from a low-quality source and we recommend swapping for one we trust. The other half it\'s fine and we install it as requested.
