Worn or Swollen PC Laptop Batteries, Replaced
If your Windows laptop battery dies in thirty minutes when it used to last a workday, won\'t hold a charge, won\'t charge at all, has visibly swollen, or has triggered a battery warning, we can help. We\'re a drop-off computer repair shop in Amherst, NY, and PC laptop battery replacement is one of the most common things we handle. Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI gaming laptops, Microsoft Surface, business laptops, consumer laptops, ultrabooks, the works. Bring the laptop in, we identify the right battery, we install it, and we hand it back working.
The PC battery story is generally simpler than the MacBook battery story. Most Windows laptops use either user-removable battery slots (still common on business laptops), screw-mounted internal batteries, or clip-mounted internal batteries. Adhesive construction is less common on PC than on Mac. The parts ecosystem is huge and price-competitive, with multiple suppliers offering batteries for any popular Windows laptop model. Replacement is generally faster and less expensive than equivalent MacBook work.
The honest first thing: not every "battery problem" is the battery. Sometimes the issue is a charging-threshold setting limiting charge intentionally. Sometimes it\'s a damaged charging port. Sometimes it\'s a charger that\'s gone bad. We diagnose first and tell you what\'s actually going on before quoting any work.
This page covers PC-specific battery replacement details. Our general battery replacement page covers both platforms. Our MacBook battery replacement page covers Apple\'s adhesive construction and the more involved process required for modern MacBooks.
Common PC Laptop Battery Issues We See
- Capacity loss from normal aging. Most common. The battery still works but holds significantly less charge than when it was new. A laptop that lasted six hours now lasts ninety minutes. Normal lithium-ion degradation; replacement fixes it.
- Swelling. Battery has expanded, pushing the bottom case outward, the trackpad up, or the keyboard up. Fire hazard. Bring it in soon.
- Won\'t charge. Laptop runs on AC fine but battery doesn\'t accumulate charge. Could be the battery, the charging port, the charging circuit, or the charger. Diagnostic narrows it down.
- "Plugged in, not charging" with a stuck percentage. Often a charging-threshold setting in the manufacturer\'s power software, intentionally limiting charge to extend battery life. Easy fix if that\'s the cause. Otherwise a battery or charging-circuit issue.
- Random shutdowns under load. Laptop powers off when running CPU-intensive tasks even with battery showing remaining percentage. Battery has lost the ability to deliver peak power.
- Battery report shows below-80-percent capacity. Windows battery report (powercfg /batteryreport) shows current full charge capacity well below the original designed capacity. Replacement is reasonable.
- Won\'t turn on without AC. Battery has fully failed. Laptop functions only as a desktop replacement until replaced.
- Battery percentage jumping erratically. Showing 80 percent for hours, then 30 percent, then back to 70. Cell imbalance in an aging battery.
- Charging port damage. Less common but real. The plug doesn\'t seat firmly, charging only works in specific positions, or the port has visibly loosened from its mount. Repair involves the port, sometimes replacement of the port assembly.
What\'s Included in a PC Battery Replacement Job
- Free diagnostic. We pull the Windows battery report, check designed vs current capacity, verify charging circuit, rule out non-battery causes (charging port, charger, software settings).
- Sourcing the right battery. Different laptop models accept different battery part numbers, sometimes with multiple variants for the same model. We identify the correct part using model number and battery part identifier.
- Reputable suppliers. Established battery suppliers with consistent quality. Not the bottom-tier batteries that fail quickly or unsafely.
- Brand-specific disassembly. ThinkPad, Latitude, EliteBook, Pavilion, IdeaPad, gaming laptops, Surface devices: each has its own approach. We have the experience.
- Charging port and cable inspection. While we have the laptop apart, we check the charging port for wear and the internal cables for damage.
- Battery calibration. Charge to full, run a discharge cycle, verify Windows reports correct capacity and runtime estimates.
- Old battery disposal. Properly recycled through hazardous-material channels.
- Real warranty. Manufacturer warranty on the battery (typically six months to one year) plus our installation labor warranty.
Signs Your PC Laptop Battery Needs Replacement
- Battery life dropped from hours to under thirty minutes for normal use
- Laptop dies the second you unplug it
- Laptop won\'t turn on without AC power
- Battery won\'t charge or charges intermittently
- Visible swelling: bulging bottom case, trackpad pushed up, keyboard pushed up
- Windows battery report shows current capacity below 80 percent of designed capacity
- Random shutdowns under CPU load even with battery showing remaining percentage
- Battery percentage jumps erratically
- Laptop is hot under the keyboard or palm rest area
- Battery cycle count well above 1,000 (visible in Windows battery report)
- "Plugged in, not charging" message that isn\'t caused by a charging-threshold setting
- Manufacturer\'s diagnostic tool (Lenovo Vantage, Dell SupportAssist, HP Support Assistant) showing battery wear or warnings
Brand-by-Brand Notes on PC Battery Replacement
Lenovo ThinkPad. Older ThinkPads have user-removable battery slots; you can swap one in under a minute. Newer ThinkPads (X1 Carbon, X1 Yoga, current generation) have internal batteries that come out after the bottom case is removed. Lenovo Vantage software shows battery health directly. ThinkPad battery replacements are some of the smoothest jobs we do.
Lenovo IdeaPad and Yoga. Consumer lines, internal batteries on most current models. Some Yoga 2-in-1s have more involved disassembly because of the convertible hinges.
Dell Latitude and Precision. Business lines, generally service-friendly. Dell SupportAssist shows battery health. Most Latitudes have internal batteries that come out cleanly after the bottom case is removed.
Dell XPS. Premium ultrabook line. Tighter construction than business Dells, sometimes with adhesive-mounted batteries on thinner models. Higher labor than typical Dell business laptops.
Dell Inspiron. Consumer line. Most have internal batteries that are accessible after the bottom case comes off.
HP EliteBook and ProBook. Business lines. EliteBook construction varies; some are very service-friendly, others are tighter. HP Support Assistant shows battery health.
HP Pavilion, Envy, Spectre. Consumer through premium ultrabook range. Spectre is the tightest construction with the most premium parts.
ASUS ZenBook, VivoBook, ROG. Range from straightforward (ROG gaming laptops, VivoBook) to more involved (ZenBook ultrabooks).
Acer Aspire, Swift, Predator. Mainstream consumer through gaming. Generally accessible.
MSI gaming laptops. Most are upgradeable with reasonable disassembly. Premium gaming laptops have larger batteries (longer runtime, more expensive).
Microsoft Surface. The major exception. Microsoft glues the display to the chassis, and the battery is buried under the display. Repair is involved, expensive, and lower-success than typical laptops. We do them when the math makes sense.
Razer Blade and other premium gaming ultrabooks. Tight construction, premium batteries, more expensive parts.
Chromebooks. Yes, we do Chromebook batteries too. Generally easy and affordable.

Common PC Battery Replacement Scenarios We See in Amherst
The 4-year-old business laptop tethered to the wall
Most common. ThinkPad, Latitude, or EliteBook that\'s been used daily for years. Battery has worn out. The customer has been working with it plugged in for months. We replace, the laptop is portable again. Fast, affordable, common job.
The swollen consumer laptop
Dell Inspiron, HP Pavilion, ASUS VivoBook, or similar consumer laptop with a battery that\'s started bulging the bottom case. The customer noticed the trackpad got harder to click or the laptop wobbles on a flat surface. We replace, problem solved.
The ThinkPad with the user-removable battery
Customer has an older ThinkPad. They could DIY but they\'d rather have us do it and not deal with sourcing the right battery variant. Quick job because the battery just slides out and back in.
The "plugged in, not charging" Lenovo
Customer\'s ThinkPad shows "plugged in, not charging" stuck at 60 percent. The cause is Lenovo Vantage\'s battery longevity setting, intentionally capping charge for battery life. We adjust the setting (or explain it to them so they can adjust it themselves), no parts needed. Other half the time the cause is a real battery issue and we replace.
The gaming laptop that lost its already-modest battery life
ROG, MSI, or Razer gaming laptop where the battery has gone from a modest 90 minutes new to 20 minutes worn. We replace, the laptop is back to its original 90-minute battery life. Customer accepts that gaming laptops aren\'t about battery life.
The Surface customer
Microsoft Surface Pro or Surface Laptop with battery issues. We have the conversation: Surface battery replacement is involved and expensive because of the bonded display. Microsoft\'s flat-rate service may be competitive. We\'re honest about both options.
The "I bought a battery online" customer
Customer ordered a battery from a marketplace and wants installation only. We do this, with the caveat that we can\'t warranty parts we didn\'t source. About half the time the battery is from a low-quality source and we recommend swapping for one we trust.
The plugged-in-24/7 desk laptop
Laptop used as a desktop replacement, plugged in for years. Battery shows odd patterns: holds 100 percent constantly because it\'s never discharged, but the cells have degraded from heat exposure. Replacement restores normal behavior, even if the customer plans to keep the laptop plugged in.
Why Drop-Off Beats DIY PC Battery Replacement
For laptops with user-removable batteries, DIY is genuinely fine. The battery slides out, the new one slides in, you\'re done in a minute. We\'re not going to pretend otherwise.
For laptops with internal batteries, the things that go wrong with DIY: the wrong-part problem (multiple battery variants for the same model name; the customer orders one that physically fits but has a different connector or capacity rating), the puncture risk (lithium batteries can ignite if punctured during prying), the bottom-case warping problem (modern laptop bottom cases are thin and bend if disassembled too aggressively), and the disposal question (old lithium batteries don\'t go in regular trash).
Surface and tablet-style devices are where DIY is most likely to go wrong. The bonded construction means heat application, very thin tools, and patience. We see Surface DIY attempts come in worse than they started fairly often.
